Social enterprise support

A county-wide multi-agency forum led jointly by SEEM and Business Link has been meeting since last autumn which several consortium members are members of.  The following is extracted from the Notts Social Enterprise Support Partnership draft terms of reference

“ Partnership aims

There are now numerous organisations within Nottinghamshire providing various types of support to social enterprise.  However, this support is fragmented, variably resourced and the quality variable.  For the sector to achieve its full potential, a more co-ordinated approach to the delivery of support is necessary.  The Nottinghamshire Social Enterprise Support Partnership has been established to:

  • ensure that Nottinghamshire’s economy includes a strong social enterprise sector.
  • ensure a co-ordinated and effective delivery of support to social enterprises in Nottinghamshire
  • establish a network of accredited social enterprise advisors
  • ensure social enterprises receive the necessary support and to a recognised standard
  • promote growth in the social enterprise sector to enable it to reach its full potential
  • recognise the contribution of individual partners to the growth of the social enterprise sector
  • promote local, regional and national funding opportunities to social enterprises
  • keep partnership members abreast of developments within the social enterprise sector and share models of best practice
  • secure provision for capacity building of partnership members  “

NSESP is in the process of developing high level strategic connectivity between agencies charged with promoting the growth and development of Social Enterprise, plus a more operational strategy and delivery plan which will drive future investment in infrastructure support to social enterprises.

There is clearly a high level of overlap between the consortium and the aims and activities of NSESP which also has a number of working groups of its own and is engaged in mapping activity.  It is important that additional work undertaken by the Consortium provides added value rather than duplicates.  The difficulty this poses for the IIP however is that NSESP is working on a different timescale and does not propose to produce its draft strategy until next autumn.
Proposed Action

The consortium does not propose to set up a working group as such on this issue but will establish a small group tasked with the following actions

  • Contact NSESP and agree basis for a collaborative, joined up approach
  • Identify gaps in NSESP current field of enquiry/activity which are required to produce the IIP
  • Draft proposals to deliver these and draw down funding
